    How Can I Eat a Healthy Diet when I’m on a Budget?

    Make the Most out of your Money with a Healthy Plan

    Something all of us aim to achieve is a healthy diet where we can feel fully satisfied and also stick to our budget to avoid having to cut other niceties in life. But this goal sometimes is not easy to achieve.

    Rising cost of living and expenses are a common worry and healthy eating habits are harder to achieve these days. But it’s not impossible!

    A plan is all you need to start and a clear set of goals to ensure you stick to it. If your main goal is to eat healthy but you don’t have a huge budget to start with – don’t panic!

    See below a few tips to follow to ensure you maintain good eating habits on a budget!

    • Plan your meals and snacks for the week to avoid overspending and over buying;
    • Make a list and stick to it – don’t add unnecessary things to it that’ll just go to waste;
    • Don’t shop when you’re hungry – Not only does this limit unplanned purchases, it also limits unplanned kilojoules when you’re trying to control your weight;
    • Drink water instead of juice or sweetened drinks – it’s free and has no kilojoules.
    • Use what you already have, what’s in season and what’s on special. For example, almost any vegetable can be cooked in stock and pureed to make a delicious winter soup. Just add wholegrain bread and you have a meal!
    • Freeze leftovers for other meals or for lunches and hit the freezer section of the supermarket. Frozen fish and vegetables are generally less expensive than fresh, come in convenient serving sizes (no more tossing half-full containers of spoiled spinach) and keep for weeks;
    • Buy smaller amounts of lean meat, skinless chicken and fish and extend meals by adding legumes, extra vegetables and grains – by adding extra vegetables to meat dishes, you will also reduce the kilojoules in the dish;
    • Only buy what you need.
